How Do I Know If Coaching Is Right For Me?
By Susan Harrington MA Ed, CPC
Perhaps you are in some type of transition in your life – it might be a career move, a relationship change, a job loss, or just a place of personal growth – and you might be wondering if you would benefit from working with a coach. How do you know if coaching might be right for you?
Here are some tips for determining if you are in a place where coaching might help you:
- Is working with a coach a step that you feel “ready” for? Is it the right time for this type of personal growth and exploration? If you feel ready to move forward in your life and/or career then you will benefit from coaching. Your coach will support and challenge you to make progress towards positive solutions. Feeling “ready” means being open to the challenge and the progress!
- Coaching involves doing work. In other words, the coach does his or her job, but as the person being coached, you have a job too. You are likely to have Action Items to work on each week. Being willing and able to complete these assignments and exercises is essential to the amount of benefit you will receive from coaching. Do you have the time and desire to complete such work? Will you follow through?
- Are you ready to be truthful with yourself and your coach about behaviors and beliefs that might be limiting your growth and success? Being honest with yourself about areas in your life that you are dissatisfied with is important to growth. Be prepared to be truthful with yourself.
- Can you make a personal commitment to design your own life with the guidance of a coach? Coaching is a lot about being the creator of your own life. Are you ready to examine the life and/or career you have now and take on the challenge of creating the life and/or career that you WANT?
- Do you have the funds to pay for coaching? The cost that coaches charge varies greatly. Some work on a sliding scale and the range of pricing is very broad. Be sure that hiring a coach is something you are comfortable with financially before you begin the work. This is important in order for you to benefit from the process.
Coaching is a powerful tool that promotes support, growth, accountability, and progressive change. If you are ready to make real progress, are prepared to do the work, and have financial resources – you will probably benefit from coaching!
